The Heritage Lottery-funded restoration of the abbey is due to be completed in February next year, bringing a significant increase in pedestrian visitors.

The project, anticipated to take between six and eight weeks, will provide a more appropriate route into the park for the numbers expected.

Councillor Tim Hadland, Delapre Abbey Preservation Trust board member and Northampton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, enterprise and planning, said: “This is just one of the improvements we’re making which will help visitors enjoy the abbey and its parkland all the more.

“Delapre has been a hidden gem in Northampton for far too long and we intend to change that, ensuring everyone knows what a fantastic facility we have here.

“And with such an increase in numbers, we need to make sure all of the facilities are up to scratch, including approach routes.”

Passing bays along the drive will be used for construction vehicles and materials at points throughout the development. Works staff will be on hand at these times to manage traffic flow.
