Who is the mystery dog walker who waded into Northampton floods to save stranded horse?

Last week saw torrential rain bring severe flooding to the town as parts of the River Nene burst its banks.

But Chron readers have contacted the Chron to praise the actions of a man at Weston Mill, by the Riverside Retail Park on the morning of Wednesday, March 9.

Eyewitnesses say the man, who is believed to be called Richard, came to the rescue of a horse stuck in the flood water as it was still tied to its tether.

One reader recognised the man as she had chatted to him before along the popular dog walking spot between Riverside and Brackmills.

Though she did not wish to be named, she said: “Without a thought Richard waded in with the water at shoulder height and without a thought for his own safety untethered one horse and led it to safety. In the meantime seeing this another onlooker rang the fire brigade which duly came to Richard’s assistance.

“So well done Richard there are not many who would have done this you are a star.”

The reader said she has often seen Richard, a fellow dog walker, feeding the two black and white horses which are often kept on the fields at Weston Mill.

A video sent in by Chron reader Bobby Waters appears to show the rescue in process. While one horse is safely on the bank, mystery hero Richard can just be seen up to his neck in the muddy flood water.

Another eyewitness claimed Richard use a carrot to try and entice the horse out of the water, once he had removed it from the tether.
