'We're seeing death upon death and it's getting silly': A43 crash victim's daughter calls for Kettering to Northampton stretch to be made safer

Georgie Ashcroft’s mum Caren, 53, died in a collision near Mawsley in June 2015.

There have been three crashes on the stretch in the past week, including a collision which killed a 58-year-old man last Tuesday (March 8), and two other fatal accidents in the past nine months.

And now Georgie has set up a petition, which has already gained more than 700 signatures.

She said: “I think there should be roundabouts at the dangerous junctions which seem to see most of the accidents, such as Broughton and Walgrave.

“There should be average speed cameras and barriers down the middle.

“It’s not necessarily the road that’s the problem but the drivers who like to take risks, and we need to prevent them from taking those risks.

“I have to drive on that road every day and I don’t like it.

“I don’t think the county council have done enough to make it safer, we’re seeing death upon death and it’s getting silly.

“They’re doing work at Spinney Hill but that’s not where the accidents are, most are between Kettering and Holcot.

“Hopefully the petition will get enough signatures for the council to take it seriously and do something about it, it’s something people are passionate about.”

A Northamptonshire County Council spokesman confirmed the road would be reviewed later this year.

The spokesman said: “As the A43 Kettering-Northampton is a red route, it is subject to regular reviews to establish whether any further enforcement or safety improvements are needed.

“This road is due to be reviewed again later this year.”

Signatories to the petition have voiced their concerns over the road’s safety.

Natalia Bell said: “The A43 can not cope with the current high volume of traffic safely, and as the county’s populous grows this will only add to the issue at hand.

“I believe it is time the county council addresses the safety issues with the A43 to protect the integrity of the county’s infrastructure.”

Judi Beswick said: “I lost a friend on this road many years ago and too many have been lost since.

“The road just gets busier and busier and needs to be improved to cope with increased traffic.”

Suzanne Huntingdon said: “I regularly use this road for commuting to work. It amazes me that it is only a single carriage way.

“There are so many drivers who use this road and it leads to heavy traffic jams.

“Also because it is limited to single lanes you see a lot of drivers overtaking often at inappropriate times, leading to dangerous driving.

“The road should be widened to allow a steadier flow of traffic.”
