A former Northampton College student turned lifestyle video blogger is starring in a nationwide campaign by a hair company.
Megan Gilbride, named Company magazine’s Best Fashion Blog Newcomer in 2015, stars in Schwarzkopf’s latest campaign, showcasing her vibrant red hair and fashion know-how on everything from primetime television adverts to shopping centre billboards.
Megan, who lives in a Northamptonshire village, is the woman behind popular fashion and lifestyle blog Wonderful You, which presents a bubbly and stylish mixture of hair and makeup video blogs (vlogs) and fashion and travel posts. Wonderful You has amassed Megan over 13,000 Twitter followers and 20,000 YouTube subscribers.
“I discovered blogging by accident,” Megan said. “I was just looking at some images on Google and stumbled across some blogs that I liked. I read, and read, and then decided to set one up on my own. It felt fantastic doing something completely for me, posting about exactly what I feel passionate about.”
Megan, who studied a two-year course in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) at Northampton College and credits it with setting her on the path to success, said: “I absolutely loved my course at the college. We got to try out so many different things and the teaching was just incredible.
“You need a real energy to act and perform and I’ve been able to carry that through to my videos and blogging. The college taught me how to present myself in the best possible way, to make the transition from stage to film.”
Many Performing Arts students go on to stage school or university, but Megan wasn’t sure this was the next step for her.
“I really enjoyed all my classes but 18 still felt quite young to be making such a big decision, and potentially getting into debt for something I wasn’t sure about,” she explained. Instead, she began working full-time in her home town of Northampton, launching Wonderful You as a hobby in mid-2012.
Earlier this year Megan made the decision to focus on Wonderful You full-time, creating a successful digital business through collaborations with major brand names and online advertising.
Megan also game some advice to aspiring vloggers.
“Don’t get lost in wanting your blog to be massive. Starting a blog is really, really easy – you can do it for free with a tool like Wordpress or Blogger. But the most important thing is to write about what you want. Readers – and, ultimately, product placers – want people who are relatable and believable, so you have to start with your passions.”
