Visuals released of proposed Lidl on site of Northampton's former gas holder

Artists' impressions of a cut-price supermarket planned near a busy roundabout in Northampton have been released as part of a bid to approve the finer details of the scheme.

German brand Lidl bought the four acre site once occupied by the town’s gas holder back in 2014 and shortly after had outline panning approval to build a store there.

In September 2015, the company lodged a bid to extend that application by adding a an option for a cafe or hot food takeaway to the site.

This week Lidl has launched an application to approve the final design and layout of the store and 152-space acre park. Though a cafe does not feature in the plans.

As well as the 1,689 sq metre retail space, the firm is proposing an area of what it claims will be “high quality public realm space”near to the building entrance .

This will be a seating area designed with a combination of paving colours and sizes.

It also proposes to put in a new junction to allow traffic to enter the store, which will feature a set of traffic lights on Towcester Road.
