Vigil at Northampton pub to show solidarity after deaths in Orlando

The event is being organised by Northamptonshire Momentum to pay respects to the people killed in Pulse. It takes place at The Boston pub in College Street at 6.30pm on Friday, June 17.

Mark Kirkham, social media secretary for the group, said: “This is a vigil to commemorate the deaths of over 50 people who died in the gay club in Orlando.

“We wish to express solidarity with the families of those who died. We also want to express solidarity with the LGBT community who suffer oppression every day, all over the world.

“Let’s confine homophobia to the history books and tell the world that we will always stand together to protect the rights of everyone to be themselves,” he said.

Superintendent Chris Hillery, Local Policing Commander for Northamptonshire Police, issued a statement of support following the attack.

“It is difficult to comprehend the full horror of what happened in Pulse nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning, when people who should have been able to have an enjoyable night out were so ruthlessly killed and injured.

“I offer my sincerest condolences to all those affected by the tragedy, which has touched the hearts of people across the world.

“I want to take this opportunity to offer support and reassurance to Northamptonshire’s LGBTQ communities. You should not live in fear of being the victim of hate, and I urge anyone with concerns to contact us on 101 to report them,” Supt Hillery added.
