Drivers are stuck on the fifth floor of the Grosvenor Centre car park trying to get as traffic grinds to a halt.
Traffic is queuing around Greyfriars, Lady’s Lane, Victoria Street and Sheep Street with motorists at a near standstill.
One driver said it had taken him 25 minutes to get out of the Grosvenor Centre car park.
Another said they are stuck on the fifth floor of the car park with ‘no sign of moving’.
Maureen Houghton had been waiting for more than 30 minutes in Grosvenor car park.
She said: “This town is a nightmare
“Everywhere you turn there is traffic, but I’ve never seen it like this before.
“It’s a good job there’s no school run this week.”
Matthew Faulkner had a meeting with Pertemps to get to for 3pm, but, parked on the fourth floor, he was looking at a wait of up to an hour before making it out of the car park.
He said: “I’m trying not to be late, it’s a massive inconvenience.”
There has also been a build up of buses at the new bus station.
Some customers reported an hour long delay to the number 16 service to Kingsthorpe.
The congestion is believed to be because of Sheep Street being closed due to a burst water main.
There are also lane closures in Lady’s Lane and Greyfriars due to ongoing work at the old bus station.
An Anglia Water spokeswoman said just before 2.30pm that the burst water main was repaired this morning but workmen were still making good the road surface.
She said: “We are very sorry for any disruption caused.
“We are getting the road reinstated and they are doing that as a priority.
“We have seen the comments on social media from motorists and are acting on those.
“Clearly we need to get out of there as quickly as possible.”
Anglia Water , she said, will be putting a temporary surface in place today before returning to complete a permanent repair “at a more convenient time”.
