A church organisation has been ordered to carry out urgent repairs to a derelict 19th-century mansion near Northampton that has been left in a “dangerous” state.

Daventry District Council has applied for a civil order instructing the New Testament Church of God, which owns part of the Grade Two-listed Overstone Hall, near Northampton, to make the building safe within the next four weeks.

Northampton Magisrates’ Court heard that the church organisation moved its headquarters out of the building several years ago and another leaseholder, the Abbey Dorcas Society Ltd, left the site in November last year.

The court heard the building, which was put up for sale last year at a price of £1 million, was badly vanadlised in January this year.

Giving evidence, a surveyor from Daventry District Council said many windows of the property had been smashed leaving shards of glass on the floor near to wear people walk their dogs.
