UKIP county councillors have called for Northamptonshire to scrap the cabinet system.

Northamptonshire County Council, like other authorities across the country, is run by a cabinet.

A motion is being put forward by UKIP councillor Jim Broomfield which calls for the return to the committee system where decisions would be made by committees of councillors from all parties.

“Tony Blair’s Labour government brought in the Cabinet system. The old committee system was far more democratic. It let councillors of all parties take part in decisions. The law allows us to change back to the committee system, and my motion would do just that,” he said.

The motion is one of a number of similar motions being proposed by UKIP councillors all over the country.
