A road accident that saw a car crash into a block of flats in Northampton resulted in the driver being arrested.

Northamptonshire Police said this morning that 22-year-old man was arrested in Guildhall Road, near the university halls of residence, following the accident, which happened at about 1am yesterday.

He was breathalysed by a police officer and then arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol. It is understood that he is a student.

Two other people were in the car, one of whom was taken to hospital with a facial injury received when the front passenger air bag inflated. The arrested man and the other occupant were not badly hurt.

Police also said a second car was involved in the accident but none of the occupants suffered any serious injury.
