Rail passengers from Northampton are being told to check timetables as engineering works will affect services to and from London on Thursday night and Friday morning.

With fewer passengers still travelling on the railway, Network Rail is taking advantage of the quieter period to upgrade overhead power lines on the approach to Euston.

Train operator London Northwestern Railway is advising its customers not to travel to or from London after 9pm on Thursday (June 4) as no trains will be running.

Early-morning services to and from Euston before 8am on Friday 5 June may also be subject to alteration and passengers are advised to plan their journeys carefully using the National Rail Enquiries website before setting out.

The operator — which runs services between London and Birmingham via Northampton — is also reminding passengers not to use the trains at all unless their journey is essential and no other travel option is available to them. Those who do travel are asked to buy tickets online to avoid queuing at the station, allow extra time and wear a face covering while on board.

Engineers are installing 2,000 metres of new 25,000 volt cables which supply power to trains to reduce risk of delays during hot weather when overhead wires can sag, catch on passing trains and be torn down leaving passengers stranded.

Network Rail route director James Dean said: “With extremes in temperature now becoming more common in Britain it’s necessary for us to make sure our railway equipment can withstand the changing climate.

“This overnight work will help stop sagging of the cables, reducing the risk of them coming down and making the West Coast main line more reliable for passengers travelling in and out of Euston.”
