Drivers can expect more delays when town centre events take placein Northampton, the county council has warned.

The last two bouts of town centre-wide congestion have happened on days when major road closures have been in place at weekends, during Northampton Carnival and again during the Lancers’ homecoming parade.

The football and rugby seasons will also both be underway by September.

County Hall said traffic bosses were increasing the capacity of the town’s roads with major road improvements but large-scale events would continue to cause problems in the meantime.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council said: “There were a number of contributory factors which led to the town’s road network reaching capacity last Saturday on the day of the Lancers’ parade.

“We are currently delivering a plan to increase the town’s traffic capacity, but unfortunately while that work is happening there will be disruption, especially when other town events are taking place.

“We will continue to work with our partners to assess and examine if there are any other remedial measures needed in Northampton town centre,” the spokesman added.
