A six-vehicle pile-up in the fast lane of the M1 is causing delays of over an hour southbound on Monday morning.

Highways England say traffic is tailing back for 7½ miles behind the smash at around 7.30am, between Junction 9 and Junction 8 for Hemel Hempstead and they advise drivers making essential journeys to allow plenty of extra time for their trip.

Another shunt involving an HGV and a car that is now facing the wrong way is blocking part of the entry slip onto the southbound M1 at Junction 11A and causing more delays.
