TRAFFIC UPDATE: Four-car crash on A5 in Northamptonshire could take hours to clear

It could be "hours" before emergency services can clear an accident on a major road near Northampton this morning, police say.

A four-car crash has been reported on the A5 near Towcester.

A serious crash involving four cars was reported on the A5 near Towcester at around 5.50am today (November 29).

It has been closed in both directions and emergency services are on the scene.

The incident was first reported by the Chronicle & Echo earlier this morning.A police spokeswoman said it "could take the best part of the morning" to deal with the incident.

A spokesman for the authority tweeted this morning just after 6.30am.

"#A5 #Northamptonshire is closed in both directions between the #A45 #WeedonBec and the #A43 #Towcester due to a multiple vehicle collision.

"Police are on scene with emergency services. Updates to follow but please plan an alternative route if heading that way this morning."
