Customers at Towcester Tea Rooms have helped raise more than £1,000 for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Owners Sharon and Tony McMurray met with Hayley Child, from the Northamptonshire branch of the society to hand over the final cheque and discuss plans for fund-raising this year. The remaining 50 per cent was donated to the Towcester Gateway Club.

The fund-raising challenge last year was given the name “The Towcester Tea Rooms Triple Olympic Challenge”. April saw the first of the three fundraising challenges, with Sharon running her first (and only) half marathon around Silverstone Track. This month also saw another fundraiser at the local New Bekash Indian Restaurant. A percentage of all takings were donated by Abdul, the owner, who said at the time: “We are always pleased to help local people fundraise for local charities. We would encourage others in the community to come forward and allow us to help in their fundraising”.

Towards the end of April Tony undertook the second challenge when he ran the London Marathon.

Throughout the remaining months of 2012 the largest part of the funds raised came from Sharon’s customers at the Tea Rooms, and also friends and family. Sharon said: “we continue to thank our generous customers and friends for their kind donations”.

The third and final challenge of the year was more a labour of love for Tony as he fulfilled a lifelong ambition by being part of the Olympic Games as one of the Gamesmaker volunteers. Tony said of the experience: “Aside from the wonderful time I had being part of the biggest show on earth, what the gamesmaker role did for this year’s fund-raising was to raise the profile for the two charities as I took part in radio interviews in both London and on BBC Northampton, which added to Sharon’s own appearance on BBC Northampton”.

Towards the end of the summer the final fundraising event was a stall at the Towcester Fayre at the end of August, where the couple, supported by Sharon’s mum Lyn, sold Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.

Plans for the 2013 fund-raiser in July are now underway and full details are due to be released later this month.
