Thief tries to steal purse after asking for directions in Northampton street

A teenager tried to steal a woman’s handbag after asking her for directions, but failed to get away with her property after she elbowed him.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened between 5.05pm and 5.10pm on Thursday, April 30, in Hunslet Lane, Northampton.

After asking the victim for directions, the offender grabbed her handbag and tried to take her purse from inside.

The victim elbowed the offender, who ran off empty-handed.

He is described as a white man, of slim build, about 5ft 6ins tall, between 15 – 17 years old, with a square chin, wearing a black woolly hat, black bottoms and a dark coloured jacket.

The victim recalls seeing a white van travelling along Hunslet Lane. The driver of the van may have seen the offender prior to the offence.
