Reports suggested that the store had failed a test purchase by a Tesco spokesman was unable to confirm the reason behind the suspension.

The spokesman said: “We operate a strict Think 25 policy but are sorry that we’ve fallen short on this occasion.

“We will speak to the local police about how we can support them better and apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”
