A new hub, which has been added to Northampton’s Cycle CoNNect bicycle hire scheme, is set to open this week.

The new docking site in Kingsthorpe will be unveiled on Friday (March 27), taking the total number of sites in the town to 10.

This marks the completion of the first phase of the Northamptonshire County Council-led scheme, which has seen 800 users sign up since it was first launched in July last year.

More than 3,000 journeys have been made on the bikes, which cost £1 per hour to hire.

Councillor Michael Clarke, county council cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said: “I’m delighted that Cycle CoNNect is going from strength to strength and its popularity has endured, even through the cold, dark winter months.

“Monthly data reports show the scheme is a notable success and has exceeded results from comparable schemes elsewhere in the country at the same lifecycle stages.

“Cycling has many benefits, but I would urge people to wear a cycle helmet on their journeys as evidence shows that they can greatly reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision and also wear a high-viz jacket.”

Hire costs £1 up to one hour, then £1 for each additional hour up to a maximum of £5 per day. However initially, as a promotional offer, the first 30 minutes of each journey are free of charge.

Registration is free, though on registration, users have to add an initial £3 of credit to their account, which will remain in place until they use it for rentals. The hire system is entirely automatic and the bicycles are available to hire at any time of the day, seven days a week.

The county council and highways service provider KierWSP in partnership with Northampton Borough Council, Brackmills Estate and the University of Northampton, have worked on the £150k initiative, which is being delivered by Hourbike.

The next phase of the initiative will be to increase the number of hubs on the network and secure sponsorship so that the scheme can moves towards being self-funded.
