Supermarket apologises after mistake over new signs at Daventry town centre car park

The supermarket chain has installed a system to check vehicles’ number plates and ensure they do not overstay the two-and-a-half-hour time limit. Tesco is entitled to enforce parking time restrictions. However, the signs also state the car park is solely for customers of Tesco.

Simon Bowers, business manager at DDC, said: “There is a legal agreement in place, dating from the sale of the land, which requires Tesco to run the car park as a public car park for all users, not just for those shopping at Tesco.

“We will therefore be contacting Tesco to point out the breach of this agreement and telling them to change the signs accordingly and as a matter of urgency.”

The issue is complicated further by the existence of the dedicated Welfare Room parking bays just beyond the number plate monitoring cameras.

A spokesman for Tesco said: “We are very sorry about the mistake in our sign and any confusion caused we will rectify this error as soon as possible.”

They added that the sign is a standard one used in various other Tesco car parks but the wording is obviously not suitable for the situation in Daventry.
