CAN Young People’s Team Northampton has become one of only nine agencies in the UK to be awarded the prestigious SMART UK Centre for Excellence Award in auricular acupuncture.

The team is the only agency nationwide that has received this award this year.

The award was presented for their hard work and dedication in the auricular acupuncture that they provide to young people in Northampton. The team, who support young people with substance misuse issues, provides the acupuncture as part of the many services they offer.

They have created a successful auricular acupuncture drop in to aid young people in the relief from stress and anxiety and these sessions have provided the team with a way of capturing the beneficial outcomes to help maintain their high standard of service.

The young people who have used the drop in service, several of whom were at the award dedication, have reported that whilst using the acupuncture they have increased and bettered their sleep patterns, noticed a decrease in their stress and anger levels and are now engaging better with other services and family and friends.

Gurnam Singh, CAN drug and alcohol worker and one of the acupuncture team, said: “I am very proud and honoured to receive this award, and I hope it also gives us a platform to develop this work further.”

The team runs a weekly drop in every Wednesday at 4pm at their office in St Giles Street and it is open to any young person in Northamptonshire.
