Speeding patrols to be increased in six locations in Northamptonshire

Adam Simmonds, the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner has approved a grant of £67,925 to the county council to fund Operation Fix It, which aims to reduce speeding offences at several sites in the county.

Mr Simmonds said speeding had been raised as the number one problem for many village residents.

The county council will use the money from the PCC to implement speeding interventions at Creaton (Welford Road), Finedon (A6 Burton Road and A510 Wellingborough Road), Hackleton (Main Road), Kislingbury (Bugbrooke Road), Roade (London Road) and Collyweston.

The partnership between the PCC and county council follows the announcement by Commissioner Simmonds last month that he and Northamptonshire Police Chief Constable Simon Edens have agreed to invest in new technology such as mobile average speed camera systems and new camera vans equipped with night-time enforcement to address the dangers caused by speeding and inconsiderate drivers.

Mr Simmonds said: “I’m pleased to be able to approve this crime and disorder reduction grant which I hope will enable my Office to work closely with Northamptonshire County Council to make residents feel safer in their communities.

“At the very least, speeding can make people feel unsafe and threatened right outside their own house, while at the

very worst it can devastate families through the injury or death of a loved one.

“We therefore need to make sure we are listening to people when they say speeding is a real problem in their area, and helping them overcome this issue. That’s exactly what my Office and I have done in providing this grant, and I look forward to working closely with the County Council to look at further ways of solving these issues.”

Cllr Michael Clarke, Northamptonshire County Council cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said making roads safer was a priority for the county council.

He said: “I’m delighted to be working in partnership so that we can explore how we can help communities which have been affected by speeding motorists.

“We will now carry out further work to see which specific solutions will work best in each community and I look forward to seeing the results of this piece of work.”
