The national newspaper carried a front page headline which it claimed were the views of the South Northamptonshire MP on motherhood.

In a series of tweets late last night after the paper posted an image of the front page, Mrs Leadsom immediately expressed her anger at the article.

“Truly appalling and the exact opposite of what I said. I am disgusted.

“This is despicable and hateful reporting. You must provide the transcript. This is beyond disgusting,” Mrs Leadsom tweeted.

“This is the worst gutter journalism I’ve ever seen. I am so angry - I can’t believe this. How could you?”

In a later statement given to the BBC, Mrs Leadsom said she “expected The Times to retract the article and the accompanying headline”.

There has been no official response from The Times but the deputy editor published on Twitter what the paper said was an extract of the interview.
