Sky Sports Jeff Stelling treks from Northampton Town to MK Dons to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK

SKy Sports television presenter Jeff Stelling completed the eighth leg of his epic charity walk by marching from Northampton Town to MK Dons yesterday.

Jeff has teamed up with leading men’s health organisation Prostate Cancer UK, the long-standing Soccer Saturday host set off on the eighth of 10 walking marathons in 10 days.

Together with close friend – and Hartlepool Chief Executive - Russ Green, the duo are walking from Victoria Park, home of the League Two club, en route south to Wembley Stadium connected by EE, a place Pools have never been.

Clocking in at 262 miles, Jeff’s Men United March - menunitedmarch.org - will see the 61-year-old check in on 32 football clubs, and along the way he will be joined by famous friends and colleagues and people affected by prostate cancer, while Carlsberg have signed up as a supporting sponsor.

On Day eight, former British Athlete Derek Redmond, Cobblers mascot Clarence the Dragon and a mass of employees from Carlsberg, were among a throng of walkers leaving the Sixfields Stadium at 8am where not even Storm Katie could blow them off course.

The 35km jaunt in the wind and rain saw Jeff and friends take to the Grand Union Canal, onto cycle paths and finally stroll along the short road to MK Dons, with the Championship club’s boss Karl Robinson and his head of coaching Richie Barker joining the legendary Sky Sports presenter in the second half of the day.

Jeff said: “They say I can talk the talk; but now it’s about walking the walk, and it was great to be in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire as my Men United March for Prostate Cancer UK continued.

“It was great to link up with friends old and new as myself and Russ continued our long walk south, all in aid of a fantastic cause. The weather couldn’t deter us, and it was amazing to reach the 200-mile landmark during the day.

“I deal in statistics – but the ones we are dealing with here are shocking. One man dies every hour from this disease, that’s six in the course of Soccer Saturday every week. One in eight men will get prostate cancer, and for black men the odds are even worse at one in four.

“Of course Carlsberg are no strangers to Wembley and I’m delighted that they joined us on our Men United March; with partners like them on board I think we’re on the right track to making this disease something men and their loved ones no longer fear. To do this we need to raise vital funds – and I need everyone to support me and all the men affected by prostate cancer by visiting menunitedmarch.org and pledging their support.”

Paul Morris, sponsorship and activation manager at Carlsberg UK, joined Jeff and co on the walk and added: “As soon as we heard about Jeff’s Men United March, we were keen to show our support. Not only is Jeff a good friend of Carlsberg’s and our Fan Squad ambassador, but Prostate Cancer UK is a fantastic cause that our people care deeply about and have supported for a number of years.

“That’s why today my colleagues and I continued the fight against prostate cancer by joining Jeff on the journey between Northampton, home to our brewery and head office, and Milton Keynes and raising vital funds in the process.”

Prostate Cancer UK is the official charity partner of The Football League and 25 clubs are represented along the route, through the heartlands of England.

Stelling will also stop off at five Premier League clubs as well as Non-League side St Albans City before an emotional finale along Wembley Way on March 30.

Angela Culhane, chief executive of Prostate Cancer UK, said: “Jeff’s been a huge supporter of ours for many years, and has seen first hand the dangers of this disease through some of his closest friends in the business, and we are fully behind him on his epic Men United March.

“We are also very grateful for the continued backing from Carlsberg, who have been friends of ours for several years. They, like us, are committed to fighting back against this disease. By taking part in today’s leg, Carlsberg are a perfect example of what we call Men United; friends getting together and doing something great to beat prostate cancer.

“Walking 10 marathons in 10 days is a remarkable challenge and we salute everyone who have walked and supported Jeff and Russ. On behalf of everyone affected by this disease I say thanks, and in the words of his long-time colleague Chris Kamara, it’s ‘Unbelievable Jeff’.”
