A primary school in Northampton has reviewed the security of its site after a young pupil walked off the premises and had to be rescued by police officers.

A year one pupil at The Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School was found in Eastern Avenue, near Kingsthorpe Grove Primary School, after she pushed a quick release button on the school gate and exited the site on Thursday lunchtime.

Following reports of a young girl walking alone in the Kingsthorpe area police were called out and took the girl back to her primary school after identifying her via her school uniform.

Mark Wilson, executive principal of Good Shepherd Primary School said an “immediate review” was conducted into how the pupil had managed to leave the premises after she was returned back to school.

He said: “We have already made number of instant changes. A quick release button on the school gate has been replaced with a key-coded pad, and other entrances will be completely locked after drop off time and reopened just before the end of the school day.

“We have also made some changes to how children move through the school at lunchtime.

“We invited the child’s parents into school on Friday morning to talk through what has been done. They left saying they felt reassured by the swiftness of our response and the actions that have been taken.

“Ensuring that our school is a safe and happy environment is something that everyone takes incredibly seriously. I am confident that, with the steps that have now been taken, it will not be repeated.

“The only relief in this matter is that the child was safely returned unharmed and showing no signs of any distress.”

The Good Shepherd Primary school has been rated “inadequate” and placed in special measures after an Ofsted inspection in January. Since the Ofsted report, the school has been supported by the David Ross Education Trust.

The school was rated “good” following the last Ofsted inspection in 2011.
