EXTRA volunteers are needed to man the telephones in Northampton for the Samaritans charity for the first time more than 40 years.

Peter Voke, spokesman for Northampton Samaritans, said: “The problem we have in Northampton and, in Kettering too, is that we urgently need to increase our number of volunteers.

“For the first time in many years it is becoming very difficult indeed to fill our rotas.

“The volunteers we have put in as much time as they can but we cannot just rely on them and although we shall be there for the seasonal period we will be requiring as many new listeners as we can get in 2013.”

Volunteers need to be able to listen, empathise and sympathetically talk to callers.

They also need to spare about 15 hours a month plus an occasional night.

The telephone number to register your interest, which is also the helpline, is Northampton 637637.
