The MRI unit features faster and higher resolution images, additional space to prevent patients feeling claustrophobic, ability to do multiple scans without needing to reposition the patient and quicker scan times.

On using the new scanner prop foward Alex, who in December became the first player to pass 100 consecutive appearances in Premiership rugby said: “It’s great to have this type of machine accessible to us at Saints.

“Rugby is obviously physical sport and unfortunately we have to use these pieces of kit from time-to-time but it really does help us.

“I’m hoping that I don’t have to use it too much but it’s good to know it’s there when it’s needed.”

BMI Three Shires Executive Director, Dominic Bath, said: “We are dedicated to providing exceptional patient care to everyone.

“We see a lot of patients from athletes to business people and everyone receives the exact same level of treatment.

“The new MRI unit is the latest in developments to ensure that our patients are able to be diagnosed and treated safely with the very latest equipment.”

St Andrews CEO, Gil Baldwin said: “Not only will the new MRI machine allow Three Shires to help patients, it will also allow St Andrews consultants to conduct researching the impact that psychological conditions have on the brain.”
