Russian '˜ultras' wore gum shields and fighting gloves says Northampton man caught up in Euro 2016 violence

Kingsthorpe man Danny Ion and his girlfriend Rebecca Clarke were caught up in the scenes in Marseille on Saturday, when it appeared Russian football fans rushed England supporters inside and outside the Stade Velodrome.

He captured the drama on his cameraphone as bottles and missiles were hurled at him and fellow supporters - many of whom were just innocent bystanders.

Danny and Rebecca returned to England on Sunday due to Danny’s work commitments at the Nationwide Admin Centre in Northampton.

But despite the fact the 23-year-old was caught up in the trouble before the match against Russia, he is going back today to watch Wayne Rooney and company take on Wales in Lens.

When asked, was he worried? He said: “Yes of course but I feel it will be more policed now.

He did consider not going back, but he says: “I paid a lot of money for the ticket.”

It is also his birthday.

Yesterday there were fears both sets of supporters could clash again in Lille

Russia has already issued with a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 due to the violence on Saturday.

Just before the group B clash on Saturday, Danny was on his way to meet a friend by the harbour in Marseilles, a port town on the south coast, when he encountered the Russian “Ultras.”

“It was so obvious something was going to happen,” he said.

“Both sets of fans were chanting really loud.

“But when we were walking towards the place where the fans wee gathering, they (Russian fans) were throwing bottles.

“It was terrifying, had we been nearer the front of the group we would have got seriously hurt.”

Danny said some of the Russian supporters could be seen wearing mixed martial arts boxing gloves and gum shields.

Despite his scare on Saturday, Danny is expecting a good match today and believes England will come out of it 2-1 winners.
