As of today, attention will turn to the remodelling of the Castilian Street junction followed by road resurfacing between Hazelwood Road and the top of Guildhall Road.

This work is now expected to be finished by Friday, October 21, in time for the half-term school holiday and the St Giles October Fair, a showcase for local traders taking place in the Guildhall on Saturday, October 22.

Throughout these works, the western stretch of St Giles Street will be closed from the junction of Hazelwood Road.

Traffic will be diverted down Hazelwood Road onto Derngate, and Castilian Street will be changed to allow two-way traffic for access to businesses and homes in the area.

Councillor Mary Markham, leader of Northampton Borough Council, thanked businesses for their tolerance while the work has been taking place.

She said: “St Giles Street is already looking fabulous, but I don’t underestimate the disruption that has been caused to local businesses.

“I’m very grateful for their support during this period and I am sure they will benefit from the wider pavements and more attractive environment that are helping our Best British High Street look even better.”

The St Giles October Fair will take place at the Guildhall from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, October 22.

The Manna House has relocated and its old premises are being refurbished as office space and a business unit while Montague Jeffrey has also benefited from a shopfront improvement grant.

Resurfacing work due to commence Monday, October 3, will take place between 7pm and midnight on weekdays, though the closure will remain in place throughout the resurfacing work.
