Anglian Water has announced that Hazelwood Road, which connects St Giles Street and Derngate, will be closed until August 26.

In a series of tweets the water company said the drain repair work had proved to be “more complex” than first thought.

The company said: “We are working on drain there which is looking to be more complex than we had initially thought and hoped.

“We will have this completed asap. Sorry for the inconvenience this is causing.”

As a result of the problem residents of one house in the street have been forced to move out and a number of business owners in the area have expressed their frustration with more roadworks in the area.

However, Bob Connelly, who runs Merland Copy Shop in Hazelwood Road, said he felt Anglian water had communicated very well with local businesses.

He said: “It is unfortunate but it is one of those things. Anglian Water were very efficient and came out to fix it very quickly and they seem to be repairing it as fast as they can.

“We are the only retail unit on this street and it has probably affected our trade by about 10 per cent.”
