A bid to demolish a former Kettering school and build houses on the site looks set to be approved next week.

Northants County Council applied to build 17 houses on the site of the former Maplefields School in Beatrice Road earlier this year.

As part of the application there would also be an open space and landscaping.

The school closed and relocated to Corby in 2012, but the redundant school buildings remain.

Now, the redevlopment plans have been recommended for approval at a Kettering Council planning meeting on Tuesday (August 16).

There were no objections from organisations, but five residents voiced their concerns at the plans.

One felt that the site should be retained as a community centre, while another thought there would not be enough green space after the redevelopment.

But a conclusion prepared by planning officers said: “The proposed development would bring back a sustainably located urban site back into productive use whilst respecting the character and appearance of the site’s surrounding, the residential amenities of the area and highway safety.”

The meeting starts at 6.30pm in the council chamber.
