A daring group of professionals will swap their day jobs for a night in the ring as they take part in a charity ‘white collar’ boxing tournament in Northampton.

Men and women alike, who have no boxing experience and work in anything from telesales, to bars, to offices, will be volunteering in the tournament in aid of Northampton-based National Children’s Tumour Leukaemia Cancer Trust.

We’ve been toying with the idea of putting a boxing event on for a while. We wanted to do it to raise money for charity but we wanted to find one that was local to Northampton where it could really make a difference

Organised by NS-UK security company in Wootton, the event will take place at The Deco theatre on Saturday, June 6, at 5pm.

The evening will feature 12 bouts of boxing as well as a memorabilia auction and prize raffle, and will be compared by John H Stacey, a former world welterweight champion.

Proceeds will help to fund aftercare for families who have battled child cancer.

Liam Warren, NS-UK director, is one of the boxing novices taking part. He said: “We’ve just started our training this week, we did half an hour of fitness, then some footwork and a bit of shadow boxing. We’ll build on that as we progress through the next eight weeks.

“I normally play football but this is a lot different, especially when you haven’t trained like this before. It’s hard work but really enjoyable.”

David Bailey, managing director, said: “We’ve been toying with the idea of putting a boxing event on for a while. We wanted to do it to raise money for charity but we wanted to find one that was local to Northampton where it could really make a difference.”

Volunteers taking part will have now begun an eight-week course of free boxing and fitness training at the Rough n Ready Gym, in Spring Lane in Northampton centre, before stepping into the ring for the first time.

There are still a few spots remaining on the card and anyone interested in taking part can call: 07508 697771 for more information.

Tickets to watch the event in June are £20 from the Deco Ticket Line on Northampton 622749.
