Northamptonshire has more premature deaths than many areas with similar populations, a website launched today shows.

The Longer Lives site shows that, of 15 areas in England with similar social and economic profiles, Northamptonshire lies 12th for deaths of people under 75 years old, with 272 deaths per 100,000 people.

It also lies 14th for lung disease deaths and 11th for cancer. For both heart disease and stroke Northamptonshire is ranked eighth out of 15.

The comparison areas include Bedford, Northumberland, Warrington, Trafford, and Nottinghamshire.

For the period 2009-11 there were 6,105 premature deaths in Northamptonshire. The total population of the county is 693,967.

Overall the county is ranked 72nd out of 150 English local authorities by Public Health England, a Government organisation.

* For liver disease it is ranked 57th out of 149.
