A pregnant woman was given a police escort to Northampton General Hospital after she became stuck in traffic while she was in labour.

The woman, who has not yet be named, was stranded on the A45 near Northampton after a bus caught fire between Riverside and Barnes Meadow in Northampton shortly after 9am on Saturday, December 27.

The bus fire caused a large diesel spill across the carriageway that led to the road being closed for two hours.

The heavily-pregnant lady was rescued by a Northamptonshire Police patrol car and was given a lift to Northampton General Hospital.

The Northants RPU Twitter account tweeted a picture of the woman alongside the message “One very happy lady in labour escorted by Specialist Ops cops to hospital from the A45 closure”

Northants RPU also tweeted: “Officers with the pregnant female have arrived at hospital. No news as to whether its a boy or a girl yet.”
