Despite figures that visitor numbers to the town centre were up, a blow was struck to the Grosvenor Centre with news that budget chain Poundland was leaving its upper floor premises.

New tenants will now be sought to take over the medium-sized outlet once occupied by entertainment retailer Zavvi.

It is still unknown as to why the firm has left the premises.

But Councillor Sally Beardsworth (Lib Dem, Kingsthorpe) says the vacant store opens up an opportunity for a new retailer to come into the town. She said: “I still think you need to get some sort of clothing option in there – we need a good men’s outfitters in the Grosvenor Centre.”

Chronicle & Echo readers have taken to Facebook to make their suggestions.

Stephen Anthony Miller said: “A social enterprise which actually wants to help the people of the town in their day to day lives.

Jasmine Mcintyre said: “Bring back Disney store – I can’t keep going Leicester or Birmingham to just get a teddy.”
