Susan Zeiss, the county council’s monitoring officer, is due to be appointed to the same role at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council on Tuesday evening.

Her duties include maintaining the constitution, ensuring that no decision or comission of the council is illegal or likely to give rise to maladministration, and to promote high standards of conduct.

Ms Zeiss had only recently been appointed as the interim monitoring officer for the new West Northants shadow council, which is running behind the scenes before officially launching as the new unitary council next spring.

She was combining that role with her position at the county council. It marks a return to the south cost for Ms. Zeiss, who is a qualified solicitor and started her local government career at Dorset County Council in 2003 before working at a deputy director level in the Environment Agency.

Should the Dorset based unitary authority confirm her appointment tonight – which is to be expected – it will require yet another new face to help oversee the unitary transition in Northamptonshire.

A spokesman for Future Northants said: “The appointment of Susan Zeiss to the role of Director of Law and Governance and Monitoring Officer for BCP Council has yet to be confirmed. It is also subject to a three month notice period which means that Ms Zeiss will continue in her role as Monitoring Officer for NCC and as interim Monitoring Officer for the West Northamptonshire Shadow Authority until October.

“The Monitoring Officer role at NCC will be filled as this is a statutory requirement and recruitment is underway for a permanent Monitoring Officer for the West Northamptonshire Council, with an application deadline of July 20.”
