Northampton filmhouse poised to open second screen next month

Film lovers are set to see Northampton's only independent cinema double in size next month when it opens a second screen.

The 83-seat extension to the Errol Flynn Filmhouse in Derngate is nearing completion and will begin showing the cream of world and independent cinema on April 7.

Chief Executive of the Royal & Derngate and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse, Martin Sutherland, said: “We are very excited to see our second screen getting its finishing touches and are looking forward to it opening in April.

The Errol Flynn Filmhouse first opened next door to the Royal and Derngate in June 2013, and has since seen 170,000 people use its 88 leather reclining seats.

The £650,000 new cedar-clad building looks similar to the previous screen, but has a new raised terrace and an "enhanced outdoor seating area."

A spokeswoman for the the filmhouse said the new screen will continue showing "the very best in the world" of independent, British and mainstream films.

The first films programmed for the new screen will go on sale shortly.
