Cllr Chris Millar was heading to the Palace of Westminster to meet with Daventry's MP.

He was in the visitor security area, which leads out to New Palace Yard. New Palace Yard was where the attacker was shot by police responding to the unfolding incident.

Speaking to our reporter, he said: "I was making my way through security when suddenly the officers started acting in a way that made you know some alert had happened.

"Then I heard three gun shots; they must have happened just outside the doors here. People came back into the security block from Palace Yard. We didn't know what was happening, who was shooting, or what they were shooting.

"That was the only real moment of panic.

"Since then we have been under lockdown in Parliament. People have been very calm and good.

"It's awful what has happened. We don't know any more than we have seen on the news.

"The police and security services, and palace staff, have been fantastic. They've been updating us on the situation and proving water."
