Here are the 24 streets in Northampton approved for a 5G mast

The 5G network is being rolled out across the UK

There are 24 streets in Northampton that have been given approval as a site for a 5G capable mast.

In nearly all of these cases, the borough council was approached for "prior approval" or "prior notification" because the 5G rollout has already been approved by national legislation.

In fact, councils across the UK have been urged not to impede the rollout of 5G set out by the national guidelines.

One of the planning statements put to the council by H3G Ltd reads: "The National Planning Policy Framework clearly states that authorities should NOT question the need for the service [...] the Applicant considers it to be important to explain the technical justification for the site."

Many of the applications intend to upgrade or replace existing masts fit for 2G, 3G and 4G because the hardware for 5G is heavier.

In other cases, the plans require constructing a 20m tall "monopole" with the antennae fitted at the top.

5G is capable of carrying large amounts of data and can provide speeds of more than 1GB per second. However, the higher-frequency radio waves the network sues has a limited range of around 250m.
