One of Northampton’s ‘Boris Bikes’ has been stolen and police are now investigating whether it has been placed on the internet auction website, eBay.
One of the new Cycle CoNNect bicycles, which were only introduced to Northampton a few weeks ago, is believed to have been stolen on Friday, August 1.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council, which own the rentable bikes, said the bike was reported missing after it was not returned by the person who hired it.
Officers are investigating the theft of the bike, which is believed to have been stolen from Midsummer Meadow, off Bedford Road.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said officers are looking into the possibility it may have been placed on eBay, after a similar model to the Cycle CoNNect bicycle, light blue with grey cuffs on the wheels, recently appeared on the auction website with an asking price £299.
The Cycle CoNNect hire scheme was introduced in Northampton in June to offer a low-cost, healthy and environmentally-friendly way for people to travel around the town, working in a similar way to London’s ‘Boris bikes’.
A county council spokesman said: “Our Cycle CoNNect scheme has had a great start and has so far proved to be very popular with the people of Northampton.
“We are disappointed to say that one of the bikes has been missing since Friday and we are now working with the police to try and recover it.”
Anyone with information about the theft of the bicycle is asked to contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
