A planning application has gone in to build a new primary school and nursery in Daventry.

The proposal details the new Monksmoor Park school, to be built on the estate on the edge of Daventry.

The new school will be built to take in one-and-a-half classes of reception children each year – in total it will provide up to 315 pupil places, plus up to 30 additional nursery spaces. The school is also expected to have 35 to 40 full and part-vtime members of staff.

The planning application says: “The school site forms part of the overall strategic landscaping strategy, and is located directly opposite the central local hub between the residential development and the green leisure area.

“The Hub, comprising shops and community buildings, is located in the centre of the overall plan.”

The school will also be close to the estate’s main road, which will carry the bus service linking it to the rest of Daventry.

The school will have its own outdoor playing areas, and a sports field too – the main field will be at a lower level than the building due to the inclusion of a flood defence embankment required for the whole estate just in case there is a problem with the reservoir and dam at Daventry Country Park.

Those outdoor areas of the school site will be surrounded by the green ‘buffer’ at the edge of the estate. That area features playing areas, natural habitats, allotments and forms an extension to the country park right up to the existing canal.

The school will be constructed by contractors for Daventry District Council rather than Northamptonshire County Council which would have been responsible in the past.

The decision by DDC to build the school itself came after the frustration of the district council’s plans for a school on Middlemore, which the county council later said it would not provide.

Monksmoor’s developers Crest Nicholson will pay for the school, but rather than wait for that money to become available in a year or two, DDC has decided to build the school sooner and wait for payment.

Daventry District Council’s planning committee will decide on the plans. Work could start on site in August, with the school opening in September 2017.
