Entertainment was provided all day, with Father Christmas arriving on his sleigh pulled by reindeer at lunchtime before the lights were turned on just after 6pm.
Tribute acts, including Rihanna and Abba, performed on a specially built stage in Orient Place, while the cast from The Castle’s Christmas music ‘A Christmas Carol’ also showcased their ability.
People seem to have reacted well to the town’s most anticipated event of the year, as Sarah Evans, 38, from Wellingborough, said: “It was great to see so many people come together and celebrate the lights being turned on.”
While Graham Bennett, 51, from Irchester, said: “This year’s Christmas lights switch-on proved to be a huge success for the town judging by the number of people that turned up.”
It has been organised by the Wellingborough Business Improvement District (BID), which is paid for by businesses, through its Discover Wellingborough campaign, which stages events and activities aimed at encouraging people into the town centre.
BID manager John Cable said: “The arrival of the Christmas lights marks the start of the festive period for most people in Wellingborough.
“Thousands of people came along and enjoyed the entertainment that was put on for them.
“The town centre has lots to offer, including a wide selection of independent retailers, free parking and green spaces, and this event proved that there’s lots to celebrate in Wellingborough.”
