A number of homes in Northampton have been left damaged by flooding after a water leak in the Standens Barn area of town.

Firefighters were called out to Walledwell Court shortly after 11.30am following reports that water was coming out of a water pipe and flooding nearby houses.

The water is believed to have flooded into several homes in the street after the main water pipe burst.

Karen Pettit, who has had to rip out her downstairs carpet, said: “I came through the door and it was terrible. It was about half an inch deep in the house.

“I feel ok now. I cried my eyes out when I first saw it. I was having a bad day anyway. But there’s not a lot you can do you’ve just got to pick yourself up and get on.”

Anglian Water and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue were called after the pipe burst to help get rid of the excess water.

Residents reported hearing a popping noise just as the pipe burst.

Dean Curtis said: “I heard a noise and I thought it was the window cleaner. Someone else heard a pop and it actually lifted up the paving slab.

“It was just coming in the house so quickly.”

The water came up through the floor of the house, causing huge puddles inside the property.

Dean added: “The fire brigade were brilliant. If it wasn’t for them it would have been a lot worse.”

Residents in the street are currently living without any water until the pipe is fixed.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: “We are currently responding to a flooding incident in Standens Bard Road in Northampton. Our team is on site and will be working hard to establish the cause as well as helping those customers affected.”
