Peter Purves: My worst buy was in Northampton!

Former Doctor Who assistant and Blue Peter presented Peter Purves has revealed how an accident in Northampton caused him plenty of pain.

The 69-year-old, who hosted the Crufts Dog Show for 30 years until last year, broke both his heels after falling off the road of a rectory he had bought in Cogenhoe.

Purves, answering questions in the Daily Telegraph, said he had always been keen on buying property and improving it.

When asked what his worst buy was, he revealed: "I bought a derelict stone Tudor rectory near Northampton in a village called Cogenhoe.

"It was a beautiful house, but needed lots of work. We rebuilt it and it was absolutely stunning, so I don't regret the house, but I had a bad accident there 10 years ago.

"I fell off the roof and broke both heels, which meant I couldn't work for a year.

"I still had to pay the mortgage, which is why we ended up remortgaging and then downsizing to Norfolk."

Purves sais his best buy was a small three-bedroom cottage in Twickenham which he bought for 57,000 in 1984 and sold for 150,000 three years later.
