Northampton trans support group shortlisted for national diversity award

A Northampton based support group for trans people, those who are transitioning and their families has been shortlisted for a national award.

Trans-pirational was set up by Shay Robertson who wrote ‘Sally to Shay’ about his own transitioning experience.The group, which is mainly an online and Facebook support group that pre-Covid would meet once a month, has now been shortlisted for a National Diversity Award.

In the category of ‘Community Organisation (LGBT)’, the local group is down to the last eight in the country.

Shay, from Billing, said: “I can’t believe it. It’s amazing and we’re totally gobsmacked that this has happened.

“The group has just gone absolutely massive.

“We have four admins of the group, someone who has transitioned, someone who is transitioning, a parent and a partner, so we can cover any questions that arise from anyone wanting support and help.

“It's so important for our community; when people have nominated us some have left comments saying we have saved their lives.

“We now can’t wait for the awards ceremony.”

The group will find out whether it has won the award or not at a ceremony in Liverpool Cathedral in February next year.
