People across Northampton are being reminded that play areas in local parks are still closed, after someone was spotted using equipment at a park in Northampton.

Some people have been using the equipment despite signs telling park-users not to and warning them that a £100 fine could be imposed.

Although Northampton Borough Council announced earlier this week that tennis and basketball courts are now open for use as long as social distancing guidelines are adhered to, they made it clear that play areas and outdoor gym equipment should not be used. When lockdown was initially introduced, the council issued a statement urging people to stay off the equipment, which they have reissued in light of the recent rule-break.

Cllr Anna King, cabinet member for community safety and engagement, said: “Our Park Rangers are patrolling and politely ask anyone they find using the equipment to move on, but they have no power to enforce this, they are relying on common sense and goodwill.

“I understand that being stuck at home with children can be challenging, and that they need to be allowed to let off steam, but using play equipment risks transferring Coronavirus and could mean life or death for someone.

“I’m urging everyone to please abide by the Government guidance and avoid using this equipment, maintain at least two metres distance from anyone outside their household, and to stay well.”
