Andrew Jenkins, a recycling officer for South Northamptonshire Council and Cherwell District Council, will be taking part in charity walk with other willing walkers on Saturday July 16 to climb Wales’ highest mountaintop to raise money for Walk for Waste.

To support the cause, Andrew has agreed to climb the mountain with a 240 litre recycling bin full of paper, cardboard, cans and plastics, strapped to his back.

Andrew said: “Waste management has a powerful and positive impact on people’s well-being and WasteAid UK are doing a fantastic job at helping communities and governments in developing countries manage their waste properly.

“Some people think that I am mad for strapping a wheelie bin to my back for the 10 mile round trip, but I am hoping that taking on the challenge will inspire people to support this worthwhile cause. If people do want to sponsor me, they can have a message printed on the back of my bin and a picture at the top of the mountain when I get there.”

Cllr Dermot Bambridge, portfolio holder for environmental services at SNC, said: “Andrew is always going above and beyond to support important waste and recycling initiatives for both SNC and CDC, and it’s great to see him going the extra mile to raise awareness in order to help those even further afield. We wish him the best of luck on his quest to the top of Mount Snowdon.”

WasteAid UK Director, Mike Webster, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the level of support for WasteAid UK shown by friends and colleagues in the waste management sector.

“Climbing Mount Snowdon is hard enough, so for Andrew to do the trek with a wheelie bin full of rubbish on his back is really impressive. We’d like to thank Andrew and all the other climbers joining us on the Walk for Waste. See you on the mountain.”

The Walk for Waste fundraising event has been organised to raise funds for the charity which supports projects to introduce sustainable waste systems in developing countries.

Leaving at 6pm, the walkers should reach the summit just in time to watch the sunset before making their way back down.

The walk will follow the 10 mile Llanberis Path up Mount Snowdon – a gradual climb that will reach a final height of over 3,500 feet at the summit.
