More than half a million pounds of Olympic legacy grants will be spent improving sporting facilities in Northamptonshire.

Tennis, hockey, cricket and rowing clubs are among the beneficiaries of £504,900 of National Lottery funding, from a national funding pot of £16.6 million.

A total of 11 clubs in the county have received grants as part of Sport England’s Inspired Facilities legacy programme, to be spent on projects including new playing surfaces, floodlights and changing rooms

At least £20 million more will be offered through two further funding rounds.

One of the main beneficiaries is the Moulton Sports Complex, which has been awarded £50,000 towards improving pitches for football, tennis, hockey and netball, and new tennis courts.

Complex manager Nick Schanschieff said: “We are absolutely delighted. We now have the full amount of money to relay our existing Astroturf with an up-to-date sand-dressed surface, and also increase the pitch areas with a multi-use area for tennis, netball and hockey.

“With a flourishing hockey club based here, the help of England Hockey has been pivotal to the bid. The hockey club is increasing in numbers year on year and the improved facilities will be a huge boast to them, but also to many other sports played at the complex.

“The Sports Complex plays a big part in the lives of the community. We are very grateful for the support everyone has shown towards this project.”

Other grants include £50,000 for the construction of a multi-use games area at Crick Athletic Football Club; £38,900 to refurbish Eydon Community Sport Field Pavilion; £50,000 towards clubhouse alterations at Brixworth Cricket Club; £50,000 to upgrade the track facilities at Daventry & District Sports Club and £50,000 to develop the boathouse at Northampton Rowing Club.

Sport England chief executive Jennie Price said: “We have had such a fantastic response from sports clubs to Inspired Facilities that we’ve reached our target of making 1,000 grants a year early.”

Clubs wishing to apply for the next round of Inspired Facilities funding are invited to attend a workshop run by Northamptonshire Sport. It takes place tomorrow, Monday, January 28, at 6.30pm, at Moulton Football Club, in Brunting Road, Moulton.

The workshop will provide full details, help and guidance on the application process.
