NSPCC fund-raisers take on abseil challenge down Northampton Lift Tower to raise £5,000

Members of the Northampton Young NSPCC committee have raised £5,000 after they abseiled down 418ft from the top of the iconic National Lift Tower in aid of the children's charity.

Six members from the group took part in the challenge on May 7 to descend down what is known as the tallest permanent abseil tower in the world.

Money raised through the event will help to fund NSPCC services including its Schools Service which delivers safeguarding assemblies and workshops to nine-11 year olds in primary schools in Northampton and across the UK. The age-appropriate sessions help the children to understand what abuse is and where to get help if they need it.

Paula Dewar, chairman of Northampton Young NSPCC, said: “Some of us were surprised by how much fun it was given we’d had many a sleepless night in run up. - we had all been terrified! Some of us didn’t enjoy it as much.

“The worst bit is going over the top because you are just hanging there. It was such an adrenaline rush and just lovely to be hugged by all our friends who had come to watch when we got down.

“We are a committee raising funds for NSPCC and we usually do events, but thought we’d like to do something a bit different. By having fun whilst raising funds, this event will help the NSPCC to change children’s lives for the better.

“The fight for childhood is everyone’s responsibility, and we want to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in planning and running the event.”
