A thief who stole money from his own grandmother’s Northamptonshire home has been ordered to complete 80 hours unpaid work.

Samuel Fennell, aged 25, of Byfield Road, Daventry, appeared at Northampton Crown Court after he admitted charges of burglary and theft.

The court heard that Fennell took a box containing money from his grandmother’s house in Woodford Halse. He also broke into a shed in her back garden and stole cans of lager.

Recorder Geoffrey Kelly, sentencing, said it was a “pathetic, selfish criminal act”.

Fennell was sentenced to a community order including 80 hours unpaid work. He must also pay £60 court costs.
