Northamptonshire School Games another excellent day of sporting excellence

Young Olympians of the future came together to compete at the grand finals of the 2016 Northamptonshire School Games held at Moulton College.

Nearly 1,500 athletes were helped by gamesmakers, 150 young leaders from schools and clubs across the county, who supported the running of the competitions.

Now in its fifth year the Northamptonshire School Games is part of the National School Games Programme - part of London 2012’s Olympic legacy.

Students from 74 county schools battled to represent their School Sport Partnership in 18 different sports including: Archery and Arrows Inclusive Archery, Athletics (Quadkids), Basketball, a Change4Life festival finale, Cycling, Goalball, Tri-Golf, Hockey, Quick Sticks Hockey, Multi-Skills, Netball, Rounders, Rugby Sevens, Golf, Softball and Tennis.

A culmination of four months hard competition of inter-school and intra-school competitions across the five Northamptonshire School Sport Partnerships, the winners won through to the summer grand final.

The games stared with a traditional opening ceremony, with athletes entering the main arena in their School Sport Partnership groups as part of a parade.

In Olympic style, each School Sport Partnership was led in by a flag bearer from their district who had shown exceptional qualities in school sport.

Once assembled, competitors were treated to a display by Blakesley Primary School Dance club, themed on the six Spirit of the Games values : self belief, determination, passion, teamwork, fair play and honesty.

Gary Sheppard Assistant Director of Northamptonshire Sport said; “We had the pleasure of hosting yet another fantastic day of school sport.

“In addition to the strongly contested competitions, the display of the School Games core values were all shown.”

Northamptonshire Sport organise two events, the Winter Games (held at Kettering Sports Arena in February), and the Summer Games.
